Economic Resources
Factors of Production
The factors of production are the resources used to produce goods and services. They are classified into four categories:
| Factor | Definition | Example | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Land | Natural resources | Oil, wood, land area | Rent |
| Labour | Human effort | Baristas in a coffee shop | Wages |
| Capital | Manufactured/Man-made resources | Printers, laptops, AI | Interest |
| Enterprise | Risk-taking to start/expand a business | An individual that starts a tutoring agency | Profit |
A combination of all four factors of production is required to produce goods and services.
- Goods: These are tangible products that can be seen, touched, and consumed, such as food, clothing, and cars.
- Services: These are intangible products that cannot be touched or stored, such as healthcare, education, and entertainment.
The Environment as a Scarce Resource
The environment is a scarce resource that provides essential goods and services, such as clean air, water, and fertile land.
- Non-renewable resources: These are resources that cannot be replaced once they are used, such as fossil fuels and minerals.
- Renewable resources: These are resources that can be replenished naturally over time, such as forests and fish stocks. However, they can still become scarce if they are overused or mismanaged.
Economic activity and overconsumption of environmental resources can lead to them becoming scarce or degraded, which negatively impacts future economic activity.
Therefore, it is important to manage environmental resources sustainably to ensure that they remain available for future generations.
